BIOMEDICINE – NUTRACEUTICAL: Antioxidant     

ACTION: Coenzyme Q-10 is an important vitamin-like substance required for the proper function of mitochondrial energy production and has antioxidant activity. It is a vitamin-like substance found throughout the body, but especially in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.  It is eaten in small amounts in meats and seafood

INDICATIONS: Weakness, fatigue, and seizures. Age-related vision, Congestive heart failure, diabetic neuropathy, and HIV/AIDS. Taking coenzyme Q-10 by mouth seems to improve immune function in people with HIV/AIDS. High blood pressure. Migraine headache. Muscular dystrophy. Heart attack. Parkinson’s disease. Peyronie’s disease (painful erection in men).

INTERACTIONS:

Chemotherapy – d/t it’s antioxidant properties

Antihypertensive drugs: may cause drop in blood pressure

Warfarin (Coumadin): CoQ-10 might decrease the effectiveness of anticoagulants by enhancing clotting activity.

TCM – Chapter 10a: Substances that Move the Blood     

Enters: HT, LV, K, SP

Temperature: cold

Taste: sour, slightly sweet

ACTION: Move Blood, cool Blood, soothe Sinews, nourish Blood, Subdue Liver wind.

INDICATIONS: Inflammation due to heat in the blood, myofascial pain resulting from lingering heat.

Tongue: red

Pulse: fast

RATIONALE: By entering the HT channel and cooling the blood, it reduces heat in the blood vessels. Sour taste enters the LV channel and soothes sinews, relieving myofascial pain. Sweet taste tonifies SP Qi. By entering the Kidneys and Liver, it nourishes Blood and Yin that in turn clears deficient heat and subdues Liver wind, so reducing migraines and Parkinson’s tremors.

CAUTION:  Arthralgia d/t Wind-Cold Damp Bi Syndrome, Yang deficiency.

NOTE: may reduce the effectiveness of Warfarin

TCM – Chapter 4-2: Wind-Damp Dispelling, Channel & Collateral-Opening     

Enters:  LV, GB, St, Ht

Temperature: Cool

Taste: Bitter, Slightly sweet, Slightly pungent.

ACTION: expel exterior Wind, settle Liver Wind, subdue Liv heat and Ht fire, Calm Shen.

INDICATIONS: Muscle spasms d/t Wind in the channels, Seizures d/t Liver-Wind, Anxiety d/t Liver-Heat or Ht Fire, St Qi Rebellion

Tongue: pink, red.

Pulse: tight, fast, wiry,

RATIONALE: It’s pungent properties easily penetrate into channels and expel exterior wind so relieving pain caused by Wind Bi. Its bitter taste cools blood that reduces either internal or external Heat so subduing pain or tissue proliferation caused by Heat. Cool temperature and slightly sweet taste cool and nourish Blood that calms the Mind. It has strong downward movement direction that subdues Liver Wind so stopping seizures. It enters Stomach channels  and courses Stomach Qi downward so relieving nausea.

CAUTION:  Qi deficiency

NOTE: if Overused may deplete Qi because of Its pungent and dispersing properties so causing fatigue. Overdose may  prevent clear Yang from rising causing drowsiness especially in preexisting Qi deficiency.
