COURSE DESCRIPTION

Module 5 covers clinical standards for the acupuncture procedure and the acupuncture episode of care, including developing critical-thinking skills to support the ethical utilization of the appropriate number of acupuncture CPT units. Master acupuncture procedure documentation guidelines, illustrated by varied-complexity SOAP note case studies. Discuss recognition, prevention, reporting, and mitigation strategies for potential adverse events related to acupuncture and adjunct modalities. Describe the ethical and clinical guidelines for laboratory and imaging tests needed to mitigate risks in acupuncture and herbal practice. Emphasize labs & tests documentation proficiency in  EHR and SOAP, with a focus on identifying red flags that require referral.

Recommended prerequisites: Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES, GOALS & OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand Acupuncture Definitions and Documentation Guidelines
  2. Discuss the Examples of the Follow-Up Acupuncture Procedure Encounter Note (one, two, and three units)
  3. Review Acupuncture Dosage Determination
  4. Master Acupuncture Adverse Events Identification, including Contraindications, Cautions, and Routine Screening Procedure for Potential Acupuncture Adverse Reactions (AR)
  5. Demonstrate Proficiency in Investigating Suspected Acupuncture AR and Documenting Adverse Events
  6. Discuss Acupuncture and Adjunct Techniques’ Adverse Events Mitigation Strategies, and AE Reporting
  7. Demonstrate Knowledge of Labs/Tests Considerations in Clinical Practice, Red Flags Identification, and Referral Guidelines
  8. Reinforce Labs/Tests Documenting Guidelines
