COURSE DESCRIPTION

Module 6 of the Traditional Medicine Clinical Practice Certification (TMCPC) Program will exercise CRITICAL THINKING/PROFESSIONAL JUDGMENT competencies. It covers standards and safety practices for Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (TCHM), including regulations, labeling, and reporting adverse events. Students will apply critical thinking skills, professional judgment, and cultural sensitivity to address patient healthcare concerns. Students will perfect skills in documenting and supporting TCHM treatment choices. Resources to identify, locate, and assess appropriate sources of information to support professional judgment and the analysis of clinical courses of action will be discussed in detail. The class will engage in good judgment that relies on knowledge and experience, is sensitive to context, and is self-correcting while discussing TCHM case studies. EAST ASIAN MEDICINE-BASED TREATMENT competencies to recognize ethical issues and evaluate appropriate actions when administering treatment will be emphasized. TCHM prescriptive principles are based on pattern differentiation, treatment strategy, and principles will be reinforced.

Students will be able to recognize potential adverse events for TCHM, describe safety considerations and guidelines to prevent adverse events for TCHM, and describe state and federal regulations relevant to the practice of TCHM, including the scope of practice and vendor compliance with manufacturing standards. Recognition of liver and kidney injury, as well as management of allergy risk, will be discussed in detail. Contraindications and cautions for TCHM will be reinforced. Adverse events identification, mitigation, and reporting guidelines will be introduced. This class emphasizes the importance of vetting TCHM sources, including microbiological testing, heavy metal testing, pesticide testing, cGMP requirements, and Certificate of Analysis (COA). Language compliant with FDA guidelines for supplements, including TCHM, is introduced. TCHM dispensary profitability and cGMP compounding best practice guidelines will be discussed. Templates of the associated forms and policies will be reviewed.
