Acupuncture
Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a trained and licensed acupuncturist using sterile needles, acupuncture is generally considered safe. For most people, there is slight to no pain even when the needles are inserted. However rare side effects like bruising, soreness, or bleeding at the insertion sites may occur. Research suggests that acupuncture can be effective for various conditions, especially pain management.

Evaluation: Like every healthcare provider, an acupuncturist must perform a patient evaluation, which involves gathering a health history, conducting a physical examination, reviewing labs and imaging, in order to establish the health problems to be addressed and create a treatment plan. Depending on the complexity, the initial evaluation on average takes 30-45 minutes. A follow-up re-evaluation of your progress must be performed at the midpoint and the end of the treatment course, or if a new problem arises, and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Evaluation may be performed on the same day as the acupuncture procedure or at a separate date.

Acupuncture Procedure: The acupuncture procedure may involve various modalities, including acupuncture itself, massage, manual therapy, heat or cold therapy, moxibustion, cupping, guasha, and acupuncture injections. Each modality requires time and has its price. You may expect to be in the office for the acupuncture procedure for 45-60 minutes.

Acupuncture Episode of Care: An episode of care is a course of acupuncture procedures that a patient receives in order to treat a health condition(s), from the first interaction with an acupuncturist to the last. For Example: A Standardized Episode Of Care (SEOC) for acupuncture in the VA community care system is a set of visits that includes acupuncture therapy, manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and self-care instructions. It may include:

  • Initial acupuncture course of treatment: 12 visits over 60 days
  • Continuation of initial course: 8 visits over 90 days
  • Chronic care management: 8 visits over 180 days

Cost: In our practice, we utilize the Medicare-established cost of acupuncture services. The acupuncturist will discuss the cost of your personal treatment plan at the initial appointment.
