COURSE DESCRIPTION
Module 7 of the Traditional Medicine Clinical Practice Certification (TMCPC) Program emphasizes EAST ASIAN MEDICINE-BASED DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLANNING competencies. It covers diagnostic principles, focusing on ICD-11 Chapter 26: Traditional Medicine (TM1) pattern differentiation standard terminology, including the importance of standardizing medical terminology and practices, as well as the history of traditional medicine. Learners will reinforce skills in organizing relevant data to facilitate the development of an East Asian Medicine-based diagnosis in accordance with United States healthcare standards. Students will access relevant resources such as classical and modern literature, research literature, and clinical experience in arriving at an EAM-based diagnosis, formulate an EAM-based diagnosis pursuant to EAM principles and theory, utilizing the standardized terminology of ICD-11 Chapter 26 Traditional Medicine (TM1). Students will be able to describe the biomedical pathophysiological process responsible for the patient’s clinical presentation in terms of current ICD-10 terminology.
Key topics of the class include guidelines for establishing working diagnoses in both conventional and traditional medicine. The diagnosis coding guidelines, such as first-listed ICD-10 diagnosis selection principles, coding rules during an acupuncture episode of care, coding for multiple comorbidities, diagnosis specificity rules, problem laterality codes, diagnosis sequencing, and Traditional Medicine disorder diagnosis coding in the United States, will be discussed in detail. The SOAP note case studies will demonstrate diagnosis formulation rules and documentation for conventional ICD-10 and ICD-11 Chapter 26 Traditional Medicine (TM1) pattern differentiation diagnoses. CRITICAL THINKING/PROFESSIONAL JUDGMENT competencies for adapting standard ICD-11 Ch 26 (TM1) pattern differentiation terminology to non-TCM styles of acupuncture will also be introduced. The class for further perfect the ETHICS AND PRACTICE MANAGEMENT competencies. Navigation of the ICD-11 website and recording of Ch26 (TM1) pattern differentiation diagnoses in various EHRs will be covered.
