Students will perfect their critical thinking skills in documenting and supporting treatment choices. Resources to identify, locate, and assess appropriate sources of information to support professional judgment and the analysis of clinical courses of action will be discussed in detail. The class will engage in good judgment that relies on knowledge and experience, is sensitive to context, and is self-correcting while discussing acupuncture case studies. The SOAP note case studies will illustrate the documentation guidelines for justifying the utilization of one to multiple acupuncture CPT units and will be discussed in detail. EAST ASIAN MEDICINE-BASED TREATMENT competencies to recognize ethical issues and evaluate appropriate actions when administering treatment will be emphasized. This class will emphasize EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT competencies, including the ability to recognize potential adverse events for acupuncture and adjunct modalities, including, but not limited to, healthcare associated infections, describe safety considerations and guidelines to prevent adverse events for each clinical procedure, describe state and federal regulations relevant to the practice of acupuncture including scope of practice, and appropriate mechanisms for the reporting of serious adverse events.

This class focuses on the development of the ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES competences. Students will be able to describe the relevant laws and regulations, including the scope of practice, that govern or limit the conduct of diagnostic studies. The most commonly used laboratory and imaging tests to mitigate risk in an acupuncture practice will be introduced.  Students will demonstrate proficiency in assessing written diagnostic reports, including the range of values that distinguish normal from abnormal findings, as relevant to patient care and communication with other healthcare providers. Subjective and objective red flag findings that indicate referral will be emphasized. This class emphasizes the importance of proper documentation for laboratory reports and imaging studies.
